For the time being, Sharon and I are staying home. We’re not members of the part of society who are waiting for the green light to travel again. That’s because we know there is no such green light that will indicate everything is back to normal. We’d be happy if we felt comfortable shopping at the local supermarket.
Even with every sensible health organization saying that you should wear a face-covering while in public, many people feel that it’s not necessary. If it doesn’t keep you from getting coronavirus, what’s the point. Or so some will say.
No amount of reason will teach the masses that, “the mask is to prevent others from catching your cooties instead of keeping you from catching theirs,” will make people wear masks.
Even if people are told to wear masks, they still don’t wear them properly. Take this poster from the MTA in New York. I feel this so much!!!
So while many people aren’t traveling because they don’t feel safe on an airplane or in a hotel room or even in a rental car, I don’t want to travel because I don’t feel safe around people.
That might be the reason behind why RV rentals are surging and the U.S. National Parks are seeing record attendance. The smart people are trying to avoid everyone else. The problem is that there aren’t enough places for those who want to practice social distancing to do so away from everyone else. The non-mask wearing hordes will invade the apparently safe locations, leaving those who want to stay safe nowhere to go.
While Sharon and I felt that it was OK to visit Universal Orlando on the Passholder preview days, we don’t want to visit Disney World when it reopens. Way too many people are complaining about the safety measures before they are even open, so we’re choosing to stay away.
The same has to go for local restaurants. Florida has relaxed guidelines so much that the public seems to think that coronavirus is a thing of the past. We’d love to support our local establishments but we’re not ready to sit down at a restaurant. Even if we’d be willing to wear a mask while waiting for a table, many other guests feel it’s unnecessary. That’s not an environment we feel comfortable being around, so we’ll keep eating meals at home. Our health is more important to us than the local economy.
How would we feel if we traveled somewhere and no one cared about trying to keep us from getting coronavirus? Unfortunately, that’s the feeling of many people and governments around the U.S. and the world.
So we’re staying home, for now. And please, don’t say I’m living in fear. I really do want to travel. I’m just willing to wait until I feel it’s safe to do so again.

I totally get your point of view. Taking care of one another is important.
But you are living in fear!!!. If you are afraid of going grocery shopping in June, you live in fear. Can you name one 15-55 year old healty American from your immediate circle who caught Corona virus at a supermarket and had severe complications because of it? Not what you heard in the news or what statistics you read. Stay home, enjoy your stayaction. We go shopping, go to grocery stores, fly on airplanes (yup last week) and have 6 international trips planned for 2020. All are happening unless some government reverses their current policies. I hope you realize that if you read your post carefully, you operate based on FEELINGS, not facts. But the more people feel like you, the better deals the rest of us will get.
This is what’s wrong with America: the notion that people should make decisions based on, as “Deltahater” put it, “not what you heard in the news or what statistics you read,” but just based on what they’ve experienced in their bubble. Anecdotes over data. It’s frankly why we’re among the last in the developed world in STEM education.
And then to have the gall to say that people who *do* base their choices on statistics are the ones who “operate based on FEELINGS, not facts.” It’s almost incomprehensible how ignorant some people can be.
we could NOT agree more with your point of view. If we had universal mask usage, more like say Japan, we could shut down transmission really quickly. It is so ironic that it seems those most wanting everything opened now, quicker, sooner, are less inclined to mask up.
By all means, you do you!
The rational response to this whole virus should have been – people who are at special risk and/or simply do not feel safe, stay home. I do wonder how you will handle the inevitable other germs you will encounter when you ever do decide to travel again. It is a big, scary world out there.
Life is messy. Life is an unknown. That is why life, or travel, is worthwhile. If we alway know what to expect, what is the point in exploring it?
I really appreciate that you provide a different perspective than most BoardingArea bloggers. Thanks, and keep it up.
And that’s the beauty of people having the freedom to do what is comfortable for them. When you are ready, go. But until that time comes, you can stay home.
