As you read story after story about whole airports (or at least terminals) that were closed, it’s kind of nice to see that one airport is actually doing OK.
Granted, it’s not doing pre-COVID levels of business, but it was reported in Riviera Maya News that Terminal 2 of the Cancun International Airport (CUN) will soon reopen, thanks to a continued increase in passengers.
In a statement, Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste said that all airlines that now flying into CUN will keep using Terminal 4. But to help decrease the saturation of passengers in that terminal, two of Mexico’s domestic airlines, Viva Aerobús and Volaris, will be moved from Terminal 4 to Terminal 2. The change will happen on July 14th.
Terminals 2 and 3 have been closed in early April due to an 80% decrease in passenger traffic. Since then, only Terminal 4 has remained in operation.
All new arrivals at both terminals will still be required to fill out a screening questionnaire and get their temperature taken.
Cancun has had a total of 2,774 cases of coronavirus and 520 deaths. They are currently at an “orange” level, which allows hotels to operate at a 30% occupancy rate. They may increase to a “yellow” level in the coming week, which will allow hotels to have 60% occupancy – and demonstrates the potential need for more space requirements at the airport.
To date, Cancun has had roughly 70,000 tourists since reopening last month.
