The Carol Burnett Show Was a Foreseer of the Future of Air Travel

by SharonKurheg

I am a HUGE Carol Burnett fan (if you have no idea of who she is, you’re dead to me ;-)) and am old enough that I was “allowed to stay up” all the way until 11 o’clock on Saturday nights so I could watch The Carol Burnett Show with my parents on our giant 21 inch Westinghouse color TV.

The Carol Burnett Show was one of the last, if not THE last (I think it was THE last) classic variety shows on TV. Besides the huge musical numbers and solo performers, they would also have comedy sketches with classic characters such as Mama’s Family, Tim Conway‘s “Old Man” (who always made Harvey Korman crack up), Mr. Tudball and Mrs. Wiggins, who were all recurring characters that could make you almost pee your pants from laughing so hard.

But about foreseeing the future of air travel…

One of the skits they did during the 9th season (1975) was about a guy who had gotten a “no-frills” airline ticket. “No frills” was a big thing in the 70s and eventually turned into the Aldi, Save-A-Lot, Food Basics, Mani, Poundland and WinCo of today – simple, basic, generic brands without bells or whistles.

Actually, they remind me of Spirit, JetStar and RyanAir of today. You know…you get what you pay for, and you pay for what you get.

Anyway, here’s the skit – it starred Harvey Korman (the man with a ticket in what appears to be coach class), Tim Conway (No Frills Guy) and Carol Burnett as the flight attendant.

Now that I think about it, don’t show this video to Spirit’s, JetStar’s, and RyanAir’s CEOs…they may get some awful ideas.

Both The Carol Burnett Show and Rhoda also had humorous glimpses into airport security in the 1970s:

When I was a kid watching Carol Burnett Show made me happy, excited and couldn’t wait to see what Bob Mackie had designed for Ms Burnett. And the skits with Conway and Cormen. They made a sad girl very very happy. I love them for being them. Thank you.❣️
