Hi there!
It’s Joe from Your Mileage May Vary. I’m here to tell you something. Please do not use our referral link to sign up for the Chase Sapphire Preferred card.
I think applying for the Sapphire Preferred is a great idea for anyone getting started with collecting points and miles. It’s just that there’s a better bonus available from other links than the one we have to offer.
If you were to sign up via our link, you’d see this offer.
This is not a bad offer. I’ve suggested getting it in my review of the Sapphire Preferred.
However, by doing a quick internet search, you can find an 80,000 point offer with the same spending requirement.
If you’d like to get in on this 80K offer, check out this post from One Mile at a Time for a referral link.
While I’d love to get the bonus Ultimate Rewards points if you use our link, I’m not about to tell you to sign up for a card by using an inferior offer. That’s one of the things I won’t do for YMMV.
Whenever you’re thinking of signing up for a new card, it always pays to do a Google search to see the best current offer. You can also check out US Credit Card Guide which lists the best offers currently available and the historical bonuses offered for a card.
Thank you for attending my TED talk.

It was a very honest and honorable thing for you to write this article and to put your readers’ welfare before your own
From this point forward, I’ve bookmarked this site and it will be my first stop each day
I haven’t been in the points-and-miles game very long and it has been my practice to diligently read another points guy’s site, usually to the exclusion of most other sites
However, last weekend I applied for an American Express Green Card and and, because I spend a fair amount of time reading points-and-miles sites, I seemed to recall a Google Search ad for a 45K point Membership Rewards welcome bonus, so I went to the other points guy’s site looking for a link for the elevated offer but couldn’t find one. I also looked through all the Green Card articles for mention of the elevated welcome bonus
I applied for and was approved for the Green Card and after approval I called Amex to verify that my welcome offer was indeed 45K MR points
Trying to be helpful, I wrote an e-mail to the other points guy’s site author who “covers” the Green Card; as of this morning, I have been given neither the courtesy of a reply (not even a generic automated “thanks for the e-mail” reply) nor, after a review last week, mid-week, have any of the many articles devoted to the Green Card on that site been updated to mention that there is an elevated offer floating around.
The offer I used was a generic ad served by Google on Google Search; it was neither a targeted offer to me nor did I have to put any work into finding it.
With this little “lapse”, I now feel that I have to verify every piece of information and every calculation on the other points guy’s site and while this is much more work than I felt I had to do in the past (I did verify material things before taking any action, such as applying for a credit card), I’m disappointed that I now feel that I must do so
Thanks again for doing the right thing
