Hawaiian Airlines Quietly Extended The Expiration Date Of HawaiianMiles

by joeheg

In May of 2020, Hawaiian Airlines announced that they were postponing the expiration of the miles in all HawaiianMiles accounts until the end of 2020. While many airlines tried to put fixes in their computer systems to prevent the loss of miles by members, Hawaiian found an easier way. They postdated the earning of 1 mile to all member accounts for 18 months from January 1, 2021. It was really a brilliant solution to what may have become a difficult problem.

Due to a severe case of not wanting to write a post, and abject boredom, I logged into AwardWallet. Besides telling me that I earned 1,200 IHG points for staying at the Kimpton Arras and 500 Marriott Bonvoy points for our stay at a Fairfield Inn, it alerted me to a change in my HawaiianMiles account.

While I expected the other two changes, I hadn’t done anything to earn Hawaiian Airlines miles. In fact, I was ready to let them expire instead of exerting any more energy to keep them active.

When I logged into my account, I noticed a similar transaction as the one a few months ago, except instead of earning 1 point in June 2019, I now had an additional point added in September 2019.

This means my points are now good until March 1, 2021. It’s just a three-month extension, which isn’t much considering that other airlines are extending points until the end of 2021.

However, it’s understandable because traveling to Hawaii is sort of a mess right now. They’ve experienced problems with the pre-visit testing system, lack of follow through with testing of people after flying to the islands, and haphazard changes to rules about visiting Kauai and Hawai’i (The Big Island). I’d imagine that even the most fervent fans who want to visit Hawaii right now are having second thoughts. Extending points another three months seems like a sensible move, even if it means adding one extra point to everyone’s account.
