The border between the United States and Canada has been closed since March 21. Representatives from the two sides discuss every month whether or not to reopen, and every month the decision is made that now is not the time.
It’s one thing to hear the game plan from what’s oftentimes anonymous officials, but it’s another when you hear it from the head of the country.
In talking to the hosts of “The Start” radio show in mid-October, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau gave some idea of when he thought the border would reopen. Not surprisingly, the number of cases of COVID-19 in the U.S. weighed heavily on what he said.
It’s been about a month and a half since that interview with “The Start” and Trudeau has now given an update on his thoughts. Not surprisingly, it’s not good news.
“Until the virus is significantly more under control everywhere around the world, we’re not going to be releasing the restrictions at the border,” Trudeau told the CBC on December 1. “The situation in the United States continues to be extremely serious, and it will take a while to turn the ship around.”
That’s disappointing but not unexpected, and certainly understandable. Cases in the U.S. are spiking. Cases in the world are spiking. Worse yet, Canada is having its own COVID crisis now, with over 4,000 new cases per day (they were in the triple digits over the summer).
As Trudeau inferred, the entire world is on an upward trajectory of COVID cases, with over 600,000 new cases and more than 10,000 deaths per day. Now is not the time to open the border with Canada.

Canada cases have already pass 6,000 a day FYI.
It’s always funny to see these countries politic about how great they are, and then…. whoops….
The US has 200,000 new cases a day. So you presume Canada has 1/30th the population of the US?
Also funny how idiotic people (like Dean) are.
