I Found Flights To Japan on JAL For 60K AAdvantage Miles (And It Felt Amazing)

by joeheg

One of the biggest things we gave up in 2020 was our next trip to Japan. I had award flights booked with points in business class. Like most of us, I ended up canceling all of those flights and the miles were now sitting in our account, collecting dust.

Well, I’m now at the time of the year where I can lock in vacation time for 2021. Vaccines are coming and maybe, just maybe, foreign travel will start to get back to normal. We’re still hoping to go on a cruise in July so I have no qualms about booking a trip to Japan in November 2021.

What makes it even easier is that most US airlines now allow you to cancel award tickets for no fee.

Suffering from a case of boredom, I realized that we were now within the time frame to book award flights to Japan for our rescheduled dates. Since our flights to Japan were booked with American AAdvantage miles, I looked to see if there were any flights available for 2021.

Imagine my amazement when I found that not only were there award tickets available, American Airlines was offering business class tickets on partner airline Japan Air Lines for 60,000 miles. This was the flight I was hoping for in 2020 but then JAL only opened up award availability weeks to days in advance of the flight.

American Airlines business class is fine but I’d rather fly from Dallas to Tokyo in JAL’s Apex Suite.

So if you’re looking to use American AAdvantage miles to fly to Japan towards the end of the schedule, I’d suggest booking sooner than later. JAL Apex Business Class seats for 60,000 miles plus $5.60 from the US is about the best deal you’re going to find.
