When looking for a hotel in a big city, hotel choices can be daunting. The task is made even more difficult when taking an international trip. For example. I can decide on a hotel in Manhattan pretty easily since I know the neighborhoods and transit system.
However, looking at a totally foreign city is more difficult, particularly if there are literally hundreds of hotels to choose from.
I could spend hour upon hour looking for hotels on TripAdvisor, but I’m going to do the same thing I did when looking for a hotel room in Munich. Ask our readers.
What’s your favorite hotel in Tokyo and Osaka? FWIW, we’ve only stayed in Tokyo twice. Once we stayed at the Westin and the other time we stayed at a Japanese brand I can’t remember that I booked on Expedia.
Our only time in Osaka, we stayed at a hotel we could book with IHG points. It was pretty but I can’t remember much else. All of these experiences are from a while ago, so more updated information is appreciated.
While we’d probably have enough points to swing a stay at the Park Hyatt or Andaz, but are they really the best places to stay in Tokyo? What about Marriott, IHG or Hilton hotels? Maybe there’s every a great value hotel not bookable with points but it a great place to stay.
In Tokyo, we’re landing at Haneda Airport, so a hotel that’s easily accessible by public transport is preferred. We don’t need it to be too fancy as this is the hotel where we are going to crash and get used to the time zone change for a few days.
In Osaka, we’d like a hotel that is not too far from Universal Studios since we’re going to visit the park for the first time and get to see the new Nintendo land. We’d also like to be able to get easily into the city as well as back to ITM airport for our flight home.
Any recommendations?

InterContinental Osaka is an amazing hotel. It is one of the best hotels I’ve ever visited. Grand Hyatt, Park Hyatt, Conrad Tokyo are all excellent.
Stayed at the Conrad and Park Hyatt tokyo. Conrad is significantly better imo. Far and away the nicest city hotel we’ve ever stayed in (out of 60+ countries).
Osaka the St. Regis, Tokyo Park Hyatt, Conrad or the Prince.
https://hoshinoya.com/tokyo/en/. A really nice mix of modern and traditional and very walkable from Tokyo Station. Very cool rooftop Onsen. Not cheap, but significant discounts if you book in advance and for multiple nights.
Ritz in Osaka was also good. Exactly what you’d expect from a Ritz, which is very nice but also could have been at a hotel anywhere in the world and you wouldn’t know it until you leave the hotel. Lounge offered some tasty treats and a nice view.
I really love the Andaz Tokyo. Fabulous hotel and view. Subway just a few blocks away that was very convenient. I can’t imagine a better experience.
The Westin Tokyo in ebisu is convenient from Haneda if you’re looking for a Marriot brand. I recommend taking the train from haneda to shinagawa station then a taxi from there. At shinagawa station is the strings intercontinental; I’ve never stayed there myself but I’m sure it’s very nice.
In Osaka you can’t go wrong with the intercontinental.
I also highly recommend spending some time in Kyoto if you have not been yet.
Hyatt Regency Osaka is the way to go! 1300 sqft diplomat Suite for 16k points, close to Universal.
Hotel in Tokyo that’s not too fancy? The Keikyu EX Inn Haneda Airport is roughly similar to a US Holiday Inn Express but smaller rooms. Convenient to Haneda. Stayed there a couple years ago.
