We all know that air rage is one of the biggest problems of flight nowadays. OK, OK – thousands of flights being canceled last minute is pretty far up there right now, too. But compare that to a flight attendant getting punched in the face because they dared to tell passengers to wear a face mask the right way? OK, they’re both important.
I don’t know how airlines can fix their issues with canceled flights, short of being able to hire a few thousand flight attendants and pilots (and *ahem* I guess fixing the weather, too? *ahem*). But based on a recent press release, I’m guessing Delta’s trying to figure out a way to keep everyone on their flights calmer.
How? They’re partnering with Peloton. You know, they of the expensive in-home bicycles and classes.
In an effort to help keep travelers relaxed, limber, and healthy, the airline is partnering with the fitness company to provide free well-being and fitness classes on all of its flights with seatback entertainment systems.
It’s the first time the content has been made available on a non-Peloton platform to non-members, according to the company’s press release.
Before any Peloton fans get too excited, no, they’re not going to have any of their proprietary stationary bicycles available at 35,000 feet ;-). But they ARE going to offer guided meditation and stretch classes that are adapted for sitting in your seat.
From a health point of view, gentle exercises while you’re sitting can help keep your blood circulating. That can help prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT), especially on long-haul flights (so can this).
Meditation is a technique some people use to decrease anxiety and to maintain a sense of calmness and Delta will have some exclusive Peloton meditation classes that will take 5 to 20 minutes. All of those classes are designed to help you relax, recharge and maybe even fall asleep mid-flight.
Stretching is good. Relaxing is good, too. But, with my tongue planted firm into my cheek, I can’t help but wonder if this partnership is a way to try to get anti-maskers to calm down and not be so “ragey” (is that a word? Ragey? Adjective form of rage? I’m going to go out on a limb and say it’s a word).

We’re in the (competing smart fitness platform) iFit ecosphere instead and some of their meditation/mental health content is actually really good. The problem is that the flyers who are actively looking for a reason to be offended or angry about something on their flight are not the ones looking for meditation on the IFE. They’re going straight to Directv channels that validate their world views instead.
