You’ll hear a lot about “revenge travel” this year. Millions of people who haven’t traveled much, if at all, since before the pandemic, are making it their business to travel this year. They want to take advantage of the opportunity while it’s here, in case COVID comes back with a vengeance and a variant that threatens to put places and people back on lockdown.
Allianz may be one of the best-known names for travel insurance. Founded as an everyday insurance company in Berlin, Germany in 1890 (yep, over 120 years – who knew???) it’s actually the world’s largest insurance company, with over 150,000 employees in over 70 countries.
Allianz Partners did a study to get an idea of what might be the most popular destinations for Americans during the summer of 2022. They did this by analyzing their flight itineraries for trips during the summer 2022 season. From Allianz:
Methodology: The data of U.S. travelers’ 2022 Summer travel plans was gathered by analyzing the number of travelers that went through the online booking process of airfare and package paths for partners offering Allianz Global Assistance travel to generate itineraries for roundtrip flights from US airports during the Summer season (5/27/2022 to 9/6/2022) for trips between 5-8 days in length.
They divided their findings into domestic and international destinations. Here are the top 10 for each:

4. Kahului, HI
3. Honolulu, HI
2. Seattle, WA

Orlando getting the #1 spot isn’t much of a surprise – it’s the 6th year in a row that it’s gotten first place (I guess Disney being “woke” isn’t stopping anyone from visiting LOL).
Seattle was #4 last year, so it moved up 2 spots. Portland’s appearance on the list was the first time since 2019. And it looks as if a whole lot of people are interested in HI since they eased their Safe Travel Program in March.

Cancun has also been Americans’ #1 international spot for 6 years in a row. Two other locations in Mexico show that many U.S. citizens love our neighbors to the south, and the Caribbean is just as popular as ever, if not more than before (Montego Bay and Punta Cana moved up two and three spots respectively from last year).
“Our findings show that ‘revenge travel’ is about to be taken to a whole new level in summer 2022,” said Daniel Durazo, director of external communications at Allianz Partners. “While it’s no surprise that Americans are planning to kick back and relax in sun-soaked destinations both domestically and internationally, U.S. cities that were once buzzing tourist destinations pre-pandemic, like Boston, New York and Los Angeles, are seeing a significant return of travelers this summer as well, signaling a positive step in tourism recovery.”
I can’t speak for the other cities or even countries on the list, but as an Orlando resident, I can tell you that tourism is once again alive and well around here ;-). Crowds at the local theme parks have been shoulder to shoulder, even during the so-called “slower” times, such as the first 2 weeks of January and February. Local hotels have seen record-high occupancy rates, and it’s next to impossible to find a restaurant reservation at Disney unless you look far, FAR out.
Using Orlando’s crowds as an example, it would make sense that Cancun, Seattle, San José del Cabo, Honolulu, etc. are equally as crazy busy. So I would tend to believe that Allianz’s predictions of what will be the busiest places this summer can be believed.
