Metal Credit Cards Are Getting Heavier

I’ve noticed that my wallet has recently felt heavier. It’s not because I have more things in it or because I’m carrying loads of cash. It’s because my current credit card selections are the heaviest metal cards I own.

I wanted to know which card was the worst offender so I got out the scale and weighed our metal cards to find out which one was the heaviest. Our scale’s not made for weighing light items so these are rough estimates but good enough for comparisons.

I started by weighing Sharon’s Green AMEX card, which is made from 70% reclaimed plastic. It weighs 8 grams.

Lightest Metal Cards

Two of my metal cards weighed in at 12 grams. 

• Sapphire Preferred
• (Old) Marriott Rewards Visa

Several weighed a slightly heavier 14 grams.

• Apple Card
• Sapphire Reserve
• American Express Gold Card
• Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant AMEX
• Ritz-Carlton Card

This was a surprise, as the Ritz-Carlton Card used to be one of the heaviest cards available. However, a recent update puts it in line with the Sapphire Reserve.

Third Place

Two cards tied for third place, weighing in at 16 grams. That’s twice as heavy as a regular plastic card.

• Bilt Rewards Mastercard
• Citi Prestige

Second Place

It’s a close battle between second and first. The scale went back and forth but I’m confident that this is the correct order. Coming in second place, weighing 18 grams, is the American Express Platinum Card.

First Place

I weighed this card several times and the scale read 18g one time and 20g the next. Because of that, I’m going to say this card is 19g and wins by a slim margin. The Capital One Venture X.

Other Heavy Cards

There are heavier cards available. The Luxury Card uses the fact it’s the heaviest card in its marketing materials. The invitation-only JP Morgan Reserve card supposedly weighs in at 27g.

Final Thought

The reason my wallet felt heavy is that it currently holds my AMEX Platinum, Sapphire Reserve and Venture X cards. That’s a lot of metal in my wallet.
