New York & 8 Other States Can Now Use Digital ID at TSA Checkpoint

by SharonKurheg

It was less than a month ago when we announced that Louisiana residents had just gotten access to digital IDs that could be used at TSA security kiosks. Now add residents of New York to the list.

a blue square with white textThe TSA has announced that it is now accepting New York-issued mobile driver licenses (mDLs) at checkpoints with digital ID readers nationwide.

How does it work?

The opportunity is open to travelers who have a license, permit, or non-driver ID card issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. They can download the free New York Mobile ID app from the App Store or Google Play and upload a photo of their ID. They can then use that for identity verification at the TSA security checkpoint instead of giving the officer a hard copy of their photo ID and boarding pass to the TSA security officer at entry to the checkpoint.

Participation in using digital identification is optional. You can still your regular driver’s license, state-issued ID or government-issued passport, among other forms of acceptable ID, at the TSA checkpoint.

New Yorkers can use their new Mobile ID at LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport, along with dozens of other airports across the country, including Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Miami International Airport, Denver International Airport, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport..

What they’re saying about it

“We are pleased to be able to add this state-of-the-art digital ID to the list of acceptable IDs at our security checkpoints,” said Robert Duffy, TSA’s Federal Security Director for LaGuardia Airport. “Travelers who want to take advantage of this new capability will find that their New York mobile ID is a convenient option when going through the security process.”

“Digital credentials are the future of identity verification, and New York is proud to be among the States leading this innovation in partnership with the TSA,” said DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder. “This is an exciting way to prove who you are without having to dig through your wallet or purse to find your physical document. Rather than handing over your physical ID with lots of personal information, the Mobile ID gives you greater control over what personal data you share, making it both more convenient and much safer for you,” he said.

New York joins 8 other states

New York is the 9th state to introduce mobile ID capabilities at TSA checkpoints to its residents. The other eight states include the aforementioned Louisiana, as well as Arizona (they were first to get the technology in March, 2022), California, Colorado (albeit with some glitches and subsequent fixes), Georgia, Iowa, Maryland and Utah.
