Save 20% Or Earn 20 Points Per Dollar On Airfare With This AMEX Offer

an airplane flying in the sky

The AMEX Offers program by American Express provides targeted discounts or bonus point earning opportunities to cardholders when they’re logged into their account. These offers are great because the savings you earn offset the annual fees that American Express charges for many of their points earning credit cards. While looking at my account this month, I found a new AMEX offer that’s really appealing. We received this offer on several different cards and the offer was different depending on the card it was offered on. Since you can only attach an AMEX Offer to a single card (once you select it for one card, it disappears on all your other cards), it’s important to check all of your card accounts before selecting your offer.

Here’s the offers we received for charges from JetBlue:

Spend $200 or more, get $40 back

Spend $200+, get 4,000 Membership Rewards Points

This is a great return on JetBlue purchases, as you’re either receiving a 20% rebate or earning 20x points extra per dollar spent. We love flying with JetBlue and recently named them our favorite US airline. To earn the bonuses, you need to spend at least $200 at JetBlue.com, on the mobile app or by telephone in either a single or multiple transactions by November 20, 2018.

When I checked all of Sharon’s and my American Express cards, we received the $40 back offer on the following cards:

We received the 4,000 point offer on one of our cards:

I found it interesting that American Express didn’t offer the bonus on the American Express Platinum card. This would be the card I’d want to use for airfare because it earns 5x points on airfare purchased from airlines. I’d guess that’s why they excluded the Platinum card, as it would be too expensive for them to allow cardholders to stack the offers.

What Card Should You Choose For The Offer

Since I get to enroll one card from each of us in the offer, I signed up for the one where we get 4,000 Membership Rewards points as I value these points at more than a penny each. For me, 4000 MR points > $40. I fully expected all of the other JetBlue AMEX offers for $40 to disappear from the other accounts, but they didn’t. It looks like the AMEX computer views them as different offers. So if you have offers for both on the same account, but on different cards, you may be able to take advantage of both offers.

I now needed to choose between the SPG AMEX and the AMEX Everyday.

Since we use the Everyday Preferred more than 30 times in a month, I’ll earn the 1.5 Membership Rewards per dollar and I’ll take those over the 2x Marriott Points. This is the total opposite as my previous thinking, as I’d always use my SPG card for earning Starpoints. The Marriott-SPG merger has devalued the earning with the SPG Card by 33% and at the new earning structure, I don’t have any real desire to earn more Marriott points at this time. However, I do need more Membership Rewards points, as I transferred a bunch to Delta for my really expensive same day award ticket during my terrible, horrible, no good, very bad travel day.

I’d suggest you not delay and select the offer you want now, if you have one offered on your account; AMEX offers can disappear if they reach the maximum number of participants allowed. Don’t wait until you’re going to book a ticket and then remember that you never registered your card for the offer. Just remember which of your cards you registered before paying for your JetBlue flight.
