Yup, The Museum of Sex. And yup, it’s a real place, with an address on 5th Ave in Manhattan. Now, I won’t sink to the childish depths of saying their exhibits will arouse your attention or you can really learn the ins and outs of this unusual museum or that they mount very explicit exhibits…mainly because others already have (by the way, those three are from Huffington Post. Because of course they are). But if was willing to sink to those depths, you know I would have. Or I would have at least said how exciting the museum is. 😉
Anyway, back to a serious note, here’s more about it…
The first museum of its kind, the mission of Museum of Sex (or MoSex for short) is, “…to preserve and present the history, evolution and cultural significance of human sexuality. The Museum produces exhibitions, publications and programs that bring the best of current scholarship on sex and sexuality to the widest possible audiences and is committed to encouraging public enlightenment, discourse and engagement.”
Open since October, 2002, MoSex focuses on a variety of sexual preferences and subcultures, including straight, lesbian and gay history and erotica, BDSM, pornography, and sex work. The Museum’s permanent collection has over 20,000 artifacts, including works of art, photography, clothing, costumes, technological inventions and historical ephemera, much of which would otherwise be destroyed due to their sexual content. They also have temporary exhibitions that periodically change out. Past exhibits have included “Universe of Desire: Why We Like What We Like,” “Action: Sex And The Moving Image,” and “Night Fever: New York Disco, 1977-1979.”
Although the museum’s exhibits are presented in an educational format, they oftentimes feature very explicit content. Therefore, visitors must be age 18 years old or older.
The Museum is located at 233 Fifth Avenue and is open seven days a week. Click here to visit their website and for more information (heads up that photos on their website may be NSFW).
