If you don’t want to do something, just don’t do it at all. That would be my advice to IHG after looking at the offers I just received. Don’t get me wrong, earning more points is always better than earning less points. However if you’re going to put out a promotion where I have to log in and enroll to see my personalized offer, it better be worth the time it takes me to do so. This IHG offer wasn’t.
More importantly, it doesn’t make me want to spend any more money at IHG hotels that I otherwise would have, which is the main reason to have a promotion, isn’t it?
IHG’s “Get Double Points Plus More” promotion is an attempt to keep the Accelerate promotions of the past alive. In those promotions, you could earn points by completing a number of tasks and if you finished most or all of them, you’d receive a kicker bonus. You were able to combine tasks, making it a game to see how’d you be able to complete the tasks with the least amount of effort. (Making a reservation with the IHG app for a Crowne Plaza over a weekend and you might be able to complete three tasks with one stay). Sharon and I completed all of the tasks for one the Accelerate promos with one hotel stay and received 25,000 bonus IHG points for our efforts.
Get Double Points Plus More
Here are the details of the current promotion. Even though I don’t find it particularly appealing, it’s worth it to sign up in case you’ll have an IHG stay. You can sign up and find out what your offer is at the IHG promotion home page.
The current promotion runs from September 16, 2018 to December 16, 2018. Each member receives a different offer.
Once registering, I found the offers Sharon and I received.
Here’s my offer:
- Earn double points on every stay, starting with the second stay, up to 30,000 bonus points
- Book 2 stays with the IHG app and earn 6,400 bonus points
Here’s Sharon’s offer:
- Earn double points on every stay, starting with the second stay, up to 15,000 bonus points
- Earn 2,800 bonus points when downloading, signing up and booking two stays with the IHG app
- Stay 2 weekends, including a Saturday night and another night, and earn 8,400 bonus points.
Note that just one stay with IHG will not earn any points with this promotions. Both offers we received required two stays to receive any bonus points. That’s a stricter policy than Hilton’s current promo where you’ll get double points on all stays (and triple points at luxury hotels and resorts).
When it comes down to it, not all promotions are winners. You still need to pay attention so you don’t miss out on one that’s really valuable.
