The Worst Upgrade Offer Ever

a deck with a pool and a hut on the water

When Sharon reached Platinum status with Marriott, one of the perks she received was five suite night rewards. Thoughts of five nights in a suite ran through my head. What types of rooms could get? Where would we use these rewards? I had dreams of cashing in a certificate for a room like this one at the Renaissance Kings Cross in London.

We have an upcoming stay in New York at a Marriott brand hotel early in 2019. It’s not the fanciest of Marriott brands. In fact, we’re staying at a Courtyard by Marriott. I didn’t book a fancy room. In fact, I booked the most basic room I could, taking advantage of the fourth night free with the Citi Prestige card.

Normally Courtyard by Marriott is not a hotel brand I’d think about getting a suite upgrade from, but when I was looking at our reservation I saw an offer.

An even more incredible room, you have my attention. Here’s the offer I received when I clicked to start the upgrade request. Note that none of these upgrades are confirmed, only suggestions that, if granted, will use the suite upgrade certificates. I can choose which ones I’d like to suggest and, as I’m reminded, the more I select, the more likely we are to be upgraded.

So I can upgrade from a king or queen room to a room with two double beds and a city view or a corner view room with a king bed and a view of the city or of Times Square.

Well, we’ve stayed in New York enough times that a corner room with a view of the city or Times Square isn’t that big of a deal for us. Even more so, it’s not worth burning four of the five-suite upgrade nights we receive for Sharon being a Marriott Platinum.

I hope that we’re able to stay at a Marriott hotel sometime this year where the suite upgrades will be a little more impressive than the ones we’ve been offered so far.
