Back when we visited Las Vegas, I booked award tickets for us from Las Vegas to Orange County, CA on Delta. This was the same day when my Uber driver took a longer trip to get a higher fare and then I forgot there was a Centurion Lounge in the airport. Just like most of the trip to Vegas, the gods of fortune were not shining on me.
It was much to my surprise when I received an alert on my phone that our seats for the flight had changed. Always being a pessimist by nature, I figured this was bad news. It wasn’t, as I discovered that we had been upgraded to seats in Delta Comfort+®.
Here’s a Youtube video of the entire cabin of the Delta E-175 that we flew on, including a close up of the upgraded seats we were assigned.
Not bad for a one hour flight. The most important thing for me was the seats had a power outlet so I could charge my phone. It wasn’t easy to access but I eventually managed to plug in my charger. Luckily it worked because I forgot to bring an international adapter, as recommended by Gary at View From the Wing, in case the plug was worn out.
Our flight was uneventful and I appreciated the power and extra legroom. As usual, Sharon could not have cared less about the legroom. She never has a problem with legroom. She also never wears Crocs anymore (Note from Sharon: Thank-you for making that clarification, dear.).
So what did I do to get this upgrade? As far as I know, absolutely nothing. Crazy, right?
Once, way back in time, I managed to qualify for Delta Silver Medallion for one year but that was long ago. Nowadays, I don’t chase status. It just doesn’t pay for us.
The only thing that would put me ahead of anyone else on the plane for an upgrade was that I have the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card (This is my referral link – if you use it, I get a small kickback)
Since this was an award ticket that cost us only 5,500 Skymiles each, I can’t imagine that what we paid for the ticket had anything to do with the upgrade. I did make sure to thank Delta for their generosity via their Twitter.
Final Thoughts
I’m sorry if you were looking for some trick on how to score an upgrade. I can’t help you there. This one was done without any work on our part. We enjoyed the legroom (well, at least I did), and the power outlets. For such a short flight, I’m not sure I would ever pay for the upgrade, which is probably why I was able to get it in the first place.
