Airplane food is nothing like it was in days gone by, but it’s still something we (kinda sorta, sometimes) enjoy. Maybe it’s because it’s a welcome break while spending hours on the plane, or because it’s food you won’t find on land (and most of the time that’s probably a good thing), but whether it’s something from the snack cart or a full meal with real silverware in first class, it’s still something people generally look forward to, even when you know it’s usually not going to be very good. I guess that’s why the website that can tell you what will be served on your flight is so popular.
On the rare occasions that Joe and I fly business or first class, we almost always take a picture of the meal. We’ve been doing it for much longer than we’ve had this blog – usually just for the memory of what we ate. A lot of people were apparently doing the same thing, so Henry Wu, originally from Chicago, took that one step further and started an Instagram site devoted entirely to what’s served at 35,000 feet.
He calls it Airplane Food Selfie.
Launched in June 2018, https://www.instagram.com/airplanefoodselfie/ has close to 400 snaps and over 23,000 followers.
The premise, as posted on Airplane Selfie’s Instagram site, is simple:
Send me your best (with food clearly visible) @airplanefoodselfie with date & flight # and I will share it here.
And that’s what people have been doing! Once the photo is posted onto Airplane Foodselfie, followers are able to rate them on a 1 to 10 scale. Here are some examples:
Some of the snaps with the most likes to date include a meal on a Gulfstream IV private jet, business class breakfast on HOP! Airlines (CDG ->NUE), a pilot’s salad on Austrian Airlines (VIE -> CPT), and a first class meal on Singapore Airlines (SIN -> CGK).
The snap that seems to have the lowest rating so far is, not surprisingly, a snack box purchased on JetBlue economy class (JFK -> BOS).
Airplane Foodselfie is kind of a fun site to look at, especially if you want a quick and easy way to see the differences between international first vs. first vs. business vs. economy class. It’s not earth shattering (really, what Insta site is???) and it certainly doesn’t change the face of aviation meals. But hey, it’s a fun way to spend a couple of minutes. 😉
