How planes board their passengers is a big deal in the world of aviation. After all, for the airlines, speed is what counts the most; the faster you get the plane loaded = the sooner you can take off = the better the chance of your being on time or maybe even early.
Different airlines have tried different techniques, but which one works best?
I always thought if they boarded people from the back and work their way forward, that would be the fastest because you didn’t have to worry about people in Row 7 blocking the aisle while you need to get to row 15.
Surprisingly (to me), that’s not the case.
This video explains why some boarding methods are better (or worse) than others. Granted, it’s from 2014 and a few things have changed, but not enough to make a huge difference:
It’s a good video but doesn’t explain which technique really works best (or moreso – why the technique that could work best isn’t in use). But who does?
Mythbusters.
The show has been off the air for a while but the show starring Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman (with lots of help from Tory, Kari and Grant) helped explain a lot of myths and more than a few mysteries, too…including “What’s the Best Plane Boarding Plan?” Here’s what Mythbusters had to say about the subject:
