Airline Introducing Economy Class Lie Flat Seats Between Select Cities In The U.K., U.S. & Mexico

Imagine flying between, for example, Manchester and Orlando, and you had the option of a lie flat seat, but didn’t have to pay for First, Business or Upper Class to do it? Sounds good, huh? Turns out you now can!

Effective May 13, 2019, the UK-based Thomas Cook will offer “sleeper seats” in the economy class section of some routes covered by their Airbus A-330 aircraft, specifically between Manchester and Orlando, New York, San Francisco and Cancun. The seats will be transformed by passengers buying (well, renting for the flight) a “comfy” mattress that, once the armrests are lifted, sits across a row of three seats.

Each mattress will measure approximately 58″ (148.4cm) long and 26″ (67cm) wide (no word on how deep these “comfy” mattresses will be) and are said to be comfiest for those 5’11” and shorter.

The mattresses are on sale now and prices start at, as of this writing, roughly $265 (£200) one-way, and can be rented from Thomas Cook (thank-you, autocorrect, for wanting to make that “cookie” – you know where my heart lies) once a single standard economy ticket has been purchased. The mattress(es) must be reserved before the passenger(s’) travel.

All sleeper seats come with:

Passengers can also get an extension seat belt if they want to lie down but stay buckled up.

Once on the plane, travelers can ask the crew to convert the seats into a bed as soon as the seat belt signs have come off after take-off. But if you’ve ordered an in-flight meal, they’ll only transform the seats into a bed once the dinner service is over. No dinner in bed, sorry ;-).

There will be 4 “sleeper seats” available per eligible flight and they are available for adults and children aged 12 and over. Go to this page of Thomas Cook’s website for more info.
