Happy Sunday to all of our travel friends, both near and far! Here are some articles we’ve read from other bloggers (and other sources) that we think you may like, as well, so we’re passing them along.
Quite honestly it’s been a long week in the points and miles universe.
- For us living in Florida and those planning on traveling here or to the Caribbean, the week has been focused on Hurricane Dorian. While I know most people are obsessed with the “Cone of Possibility”, I’ve learned to read the Discussion tab instead. It explains the reason behind the current forecast including when the National Hurricane Center essentially says “your guess is as good as ours as for where this thing will be five days from now”
- In the next most important news of the week, the TSA was forced to make a statement about whether you can bring the Coca-Cola bottles sold at Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge in the Disney parks in LA and Orlando home with you on the plane. If you were wondering, the TSA also offers advice if you’re bringing home a Light Saber or magical wand from Ollivander’s.
- In more typical miles and points news, Sam Chui wrote about how United MileagePlus miles will no longer expire after 18 months, and why that might not be a great thing. This is great news for us as we’re not flying on United but still have some miles left in our account to use on partner airlines.
- Did Starwood’s voice on the FlyerTalk messageboard just get #Bonvoyed? Who knows? Gary from View from the Wing writes about how the person behind the “Starwood Lurker” ID on FlyerTalk is no longer with the company after 22 years and is now…..working for Hilton?
- While there has been no shortage of stories about animals on planes, Matthew from Live and Let’s Fly shares a story about “Flirty,” the miniature mobility assistance horse who flies on American. Don’t believe me, check out Instagram.
- If you’re not loyal to any hotel chain, using Hotels.com can be a good alternative as you earn 10% back on each stay redeemable after 10 nights. Ben from One Mile at a Time writes about how Hotels.com is now starting to charge for you redeem that “free night”.
- I’d argue that visiting the Maldives is the most aspirational, and costly, places to visit even when using points and miles. So imagine if your hotel wouldn’t let you even get to the island because you weren’t using their overpriced transport. Such is the story on Travel Update about the Waldorf Astoria Maldives. I’d love to visit the Maldives but stories like these are why I’m hesitant to book a trip there.
