I tagged an email from Avis that I received in September but somehow forgot about it until I went to clean out my mailbox. The basic premise of the promotion is that for every two rentals of an intermediate car or larger lasting two nights or more, you’ll receive a free rental day certificate.
Hmmm, that sounds familiar. Rent twice and get a free day. I wonder where they got that idea from. I don’t know about you, but that seems awfully similar to National Car Rental’s One Two Free promotion.
To sign up for the promotion, you need to register on the Avis website. If you aren’t already a member of Avis Preferred, why not? Here’s an article with information on how to sign up for all the rental car programs and the benefits each of them provides.
Here are the basic details of the promotion:
Customers can earn one (1) Free Day for completing two (2) Qualifying Rentals at Avis participating locations in the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands between September 9, 2019 and February 28, 2020. A Qualifying Rental is defined as a paid rental consisting of a minimum of two paid consecutive days’ base charges. Customer must reserve an Intermediate car class or above.
Each month you’ll receive a statement by email saying how many free rental days you earned and a coupon code. The code is good for the number of nights earned for the entire month and needs to be used for a single rental. If you earned four free days and use the code for a 2-day rental, you lose the other two days. The rental day reward coupon is redeemable on an Economy (Group A) through a Full Size (Group E) for rentals completed by May 24, 2020.
The rental reward covers the base cost of the rental so you’re still on the hook to pay the taxes and fees, which can be a significant cost depending on the base price of the rental.
If you’re a frequent or even a semi-frequent Avis renter, it makes sense to sign up for the promotion. A nice difference between Avis’ promotion and the one from National is that you do not have to be signed up to earn Avis Preferred points to participate so you can credit your rentals to an airline partner and still earn free rentals.
When you sign up for the Avis promotion, all of your rentals from the first of that calendar month will count but not those from previous months. That’s a nice perk for those who tend to procrastinate about signing up for offers like this.
So while this might not be the most original rental car promotion, it shows that Avis was concerned about losing customers to National because of their promotion. Competition between companies tends to be great for consumers giving us more access to discounts and hopefully better service (but I’m hot holding my breath for that second one.)
