My New Pet Peeve About Alaska Airlines

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not your typical aviation nerd. True, I love to travel, but for me, being on a plane is just a means of getting from Point A to Point B. Don’t get me wrong; if Joe manages to snag first or business class seats because of whatever miles he’s accumulated, I won’t say no; it’s a nice change of pace. But in general, as long as the price isn’t outrageous, I get somewhere safely and on time, and my luggage shows up on the carousel after we land, I’m happy and the rest is just gravy.

I’m also not particularly loyal to any given airline; each one has given me some degree of happiness or concern at one time or another. There are some that I’m DISloyal to; I won’t fly on Spirit or United because of how they respectively do business. And after my experience from a couple of weeks ago Alaska Airlines, although not on my personal “No FLy List” just yet, did go into my “you’re giving me agita” category.

Observe, if you will, three packages of Biscoff cookies. The top package, weighing in at 0.9 oz., is from American Airlines. The middle one, also 0.9 oz., is from Delta Airlines. The bottom one, weighing in at 0.5 oz., is from Alaska Airlines.

We received one of each on recent flights. We were able to get an extra if we asked but to start, all we got was the one package.

Really, Alaska? Really? A half-ounce of cookies? That’s it?

Sure, it’s an admittedly small (very small) detail of a flight. But unless you’re flying first class, the snack cart is one of the few highlights of a flight. I mean, people ask to be woken up for it and everything!

And yes, I know, I know. You can buy Biscoff cookies at Walgreens, Publix, Walmart, Costco, etc. and just bring them into the plane. They just taste better when you get it from the flight attendant ;-). You know, sorta like how ice cream from the ice cream man always tasted better than what mom had in the freezer.

Alaska Airlines, you’ve disappointed me…

I feel your pain. We stayed in a JW Marriott last week that had Biscoff cookies next to the coffeemaker in the room. They were like communion wafers – .2 oz 😀

It looks like Alaska is just offering the original version (15.5g for 2 cookies) which you can find at basically at any outlet while Delta and American have the XL version (25g for 2 cookies, plus their dedicated branding). Maybe you could just ask for a second one if that’s too little.

Oh, you can always ask for another one. You can ask for a second package from Delta and American, too. The point is that what Alaska automatically gives out is so chintzy. A half ounce of cookies is, by far, the smallest snack I’ve ever seen from any airline I’ve been on, save for the ones that just don’t give out snacks. Therefore, pet peeve 😉

Separate of the tiny Biscoff, how was your travel experience with Alaska?

Since travel is on my own dime now – and I have a bunches of points stored up…like a bear stores up food for the winter – I find their transcon service to JFK to be a welcome respite compared to the likes of AA, B6, DL and UA for non-stop service. Even with DL’s all wide-body service on the LAX-JFK route, B6’s Mint and AA’s dedicated true First and Business class, I find Alaska’s Terminal 6 at LAX to be less crazy than other big boy airlines terminals, and at JFK…WOW- to me arriving and departing Terminal 7 is so much quieter and calmer than the other terminals at Kennedy.

When using a first class award and/or an actually paid first class fare (not an upgrade), I like that Alaska continues to provide free same day travel access to the Alaska Lounge and both LAX and JFK have them!

This will make a post for another day about how n my opinion Alaska has turned around their service – it was pretty dismal some years ago – now – they run a usually on-time airline, with friendly service not only at the terminal/gate, but as well as in the air. The dust has basically settled with Virgin America – and for me, my flights seem to operate as scheduled with too much in the way of operational delays and/or cancellations.

I have been burning up miles for my trips to MCO – but I have been finding really good availability using discounted first class awards from BUR to MCO – via DFW on AA. Probably because the route between BUR and DFW is still relatively new, some days the flights seem lighter as far as loads than others days I flown the BUR-DFW segment.

I wish Alaska had more service to MCO from LAX – I would use that as an option – but award space is really hard to come by (for my dates) on that route.

Hopefully, your next trip on Alaska will be better – and you’ll have to pre-pack some extra Biscoff’s along for the ride!

Oh, the flight itself was fine. Took off on time, landed on time and our luggage arrived safely. Can’t ask for more than that 🙂
