Our travel plans have changed significantly from the beginning of the year. While we’ve put many of our plans on hold, our international plans are delayed for most likely over one year. Those flights will either be rebooked or the miles will be refunded back to our frequent flyer accounts.
So what type of airline miles am I looking to earn right now? JetBlue and Southwest because I think most of our upcoming travel will be domestic instead of international.
For starters, both programs allow you to book any available flight. The number of miles required is based on the cash price of the ticket. That means if other airlines are not releasing award tickets due to decreased schedules and increased demand, you’ll still be able to use your points on these airlines.
JetBlue and Southwest also serve many destinations in the US. While the service to/from Orlando has been reduced during the travel slowdown, there are still ways to use your points. If things start to get back to normal, I’d think they’d be the two of the first airlines to resume flights to Florida.
I’m not looking at any other airline miles because I have more miles in those programs than I need. I’m still hoping I’ll be able to use our American and United miles for flights to Asia in 2021. I don’t earn Delta SkyMiles with credit cards because I can easily transfer points from American Express Membership Rewards.
JetBlue has also increased earning on the JetBlue Plus card to two TrueBlue points per dollar until June 15th. I’m not trying to earn points with my Southwest Priority card because Southwest is a Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer partner and I can earn more points with my Sapphire Reserve at the moment with my supermarket spending.
This change is only temporary because I’ll eventually need to replenish my flexible rewards points. But for the time being, I might as well earn points in the programs I’ll be sure to use in a reasonable timeframe.
