After being closed since mid-March due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic, the Walt Disney World Resort is targeting to reopen its parks beginning on July 11. Under their proposed plan, Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom would reopen July 11, while Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios would open July 15.
On Wednesday, May 27, Jim MacPhee, senior vice president of operations for WDW, gave the company’s presentation to the Orange County Economic Recovery Task Force, the subcommittee of the Florida governor’s Re-Open Florida Task Force. The subcommittee is headed by Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings and is comprised of over 40 local business leaders.
Disney Springs, which is WDW’s shopping and dining district, partially opened on May 20th, with more of it reopening on May 27th. Among other safety updates, a limited number of guests are allowed to visit during opening hours, and must submit to limited parking, temperature checks, social distancing and wearing a facial covering (except when eating). The same will hold true for the parks, once they open.
MacPhee suggested that when the parks reopen, there will be no parades, fireworks or character meet and greets; nothing that would typically draw a crowd.
Universal Orlando Resort presented its reopening plans earlier this month. Their plan was approved and that resort will reopen on June 5. Their shopping, dining, and nightclub area reopened in mid-May – here’s a report of when we visited it on May 20th.
Deming reportedly previewed the plans earlier and “liked what he saw,” as per the Orlando Sentinel. If he endorses Disney’s proposal, he will forward it on to Governor DeSantis to get his final approval.
