One of the big perks of having a no-annual-fee Discover card is the rotating quarterly 5% cashback categories. You can earn up to $75 back every three months by spending in the designated categories.
I had no problem maxing out the promotion for the first three months of the year when the spending categories were grocery stores and drug stores. This was the beginning of coronavirus and we had to stock up on everything, just in case. I’m glad we did.
This quarter (April-June), I hadn’t earned much extra cash from Discover. Actually, I haven’t earned anything. That’s because the bonus categories are gas stations, Uber, Lyft and wholesale clubs. Not where I’m spending money.
I guess I’m not the only one as Discover suddenly added an extra bonus category for June – The Home Depot.
I wish they would have added this category before we went and bought all the flowers for the front of the house.
Even if you aren’t planning a major home project, you should be able to purchase either a Home Depot gift card to use in the future or any of the many other gift cards that they sell at the store. Unlike some other banks (*cough AMEX cough*), Discover doesn’t seem to mind if you use their card to buy gift cards to take advantage of their bonus categories.
Many of the other banks needed to make changes to their card benefits in this coronavirus world we’re now living in. Discover isn’t in that position because their cards don’t charge annual fees. However, I’m sure they noticed a decrease in spending on the bonus categories this quarter and needed to give their numbers a boost.
I guess we’ll have to see what they do next quarter when the bonus categories are restaurants and PayPal.
