The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has extended its no sail order for all cruise ships departing from the U.S. The order had been set to expire on July 24th but has now been extended through September 30th.
The announcement comes as the number of people with the 2019 Novel Coronavirus continues to grow exponentially. The CDC director believes that traveling via cruise ship at this time would continue to introduce, transmit and spread the virus. In fact, at this time, even cruise ships that only have essential crew members on board are showing signs of virus transmission.
The ban covers ships that carry 250 or more passengers. The CDC suggested that larger cruise ships, which can carry several thousand people, are generally more crowded than most urban settings. Smaller ships, such as this one, which will continue with Alaska cruises this summer, are exempt from the ban.
The order will remain in effect until one of the following occurs:
- The expiration of the Secretary of Health and Human Services’ declaration that COVID-19 constitutes a public health emergency.
- The CDC Director rescinds or modifies the order based on specific public health or other considerations, or
- September 30, 2020.
The extension of the no sail orders was reportedly largely expected to be extended and most major cruise lines had already paused their operations through the summer.
The CLIA issued a statement saying it was committed to safety and would talk with CDC about appropriate steps to let cruises resume in the United States, “when the time is right.”
