In May 2020, American Express added benefits to many of its cards as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The best credits were for the Personal and Business versions of the American Express Platinum card but AMEX also added a benefit to the base level Green Card. Cardholders could get a $10 per month statement credit on wireless telephone services (May through December 2020).
I don’t know about you, but I spend way more than $10 on my wireless bill every month. I didn’t want to move that charge to my Green AMEX because I get insurance for our phones by paying the bill with my Chase Ink Preferred.
However, $10 is $10 and I’m not about to let AMEX keep that money. I just set a reminder to go onto the T-Mobile website every month and make a manual payment for $10.
As for the statement credit? Last month it posted 2 days after the charge.
The only warning I’ve heard is that if you use Google Fi for your wireless service, the credit might not be triggered by paying with your Green AMEX. Check out this post on Frequent Miler for more details about this glitch.
Final Thoughts
If you have an AMEX Green card, don’t forget to pay at least $10 of your cell phone bill each month until the end of the year to get your credit. That’s $70 back on a card with a $150 annual fee. Adding in the $100 credit each year for a CLEAR membership, the Green card could be a moneymaker in 2020.
