Anyone who follows the scientists and their attempts to contain or at least minimize the spread of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus knows that the lynchpin of that system is testing and contact tracing.
Without getting into too much detail, it means that once a person has tested positive, all of their recent contacts should isolate away from others until they’re able to be tested to see if they’ve been infected. This is the best way to stop the virus from spreading. A quarantine period is the only way to keep asymptomatic people (those who have the virus but don’t show symptoms) from spreading the disease to others.
Here’s the infograph the Florida Department of Health has put out showing how contact tracing is supposed to work. This system assumes that people can get testing results in less than 10-14 days and provides the state with all of their recent contacts. Neither of those things are currently happening.
One of the most important parts of the system is being able to inform residents who have been in contact with an infected person. In order to do this, the Florida Department of Health is counting on people answering a call from a random phone number.
How is Florida letting people know this? By a post on its Twitter account.
We’re doomed.
