Many activities that were, until recently, seen as quaint memories of a simpler time are now trending again. Camping, drive-in movies, and most importantly, the road trip. With people trying to avoid crowded places, jumping in the car and heading out to get away from home for a few days is more appealing than ever.
One of the downsides of a road trip is spending hour after hour in the car. This monotony is how games like I Spy and license plate BINGO came into being. Fortunately for us, we have an advantage not available to previous generations – technology. Sure, you can spend the time playing games on your phone but what if you could learn about the area you’re driving through while getting from A to B?
Even better, what if you could have Kevin Costner narrate your vacation?
The app HearHere does just that. Based on your GPS coordinates, the app can tell you more information about where you are.
You can set the app to tell you things that are of interest to you. It can also show you places of interest if you want to make a little detour during your drive,
This sounds like a great idea, but there are some downsides. Downloading the app is free but you only get a few stories. After that, it’s a $49.99 annual fee.
A bigger downer for us is that, for now, the app has 1,500 stories only for locations along the west coast. The developers are promising that there will be over 10,000 stories available for places across the United States by the summer of 2021. Besides narrations by Kevin Costner, who is one of the co-founders of the company, the app also has selections from basketball coach Phil Jackson and a host of “other top voice talent.”
The HearHere app is currently only available for iOS from the Apple Store. However, the terms of use mention the Google Play store, so I’d imagine an Android compatible version is in the works.
If you’re going to take a west coast road trip, this sounds like a cool thing to check out and bring along.
