British Airways To Launch Route It Hasn’t Flown In 30 Years

Ever since COVID-19 started, airlines have constantly played with their schedules, depending on demand. Some airlines have limited routes a certain number of times per week, then increased or decreased them a few months later, as they felt necessary based on demand. Others have gotten permission to stop flying certain routes entirely.

However, British Airways has recently decided to switch a route, well, it’s actually re-starting a route, between London Heathrow (LHR) and Bermuda (BDA). And yep, it’s a re-start because BA used to fly that very route in the past. Long past. As in, “they haven’t flown this route since 1989.”

BA had been flying to Bermuda via Gatwick Airport. That service stopped in March due to the pandemic, but then resumed, from Gatwick, in mid-July. However with reduced air travel due to the continuation of COVID-19, slots became available at Heathrow’s Terminal 5. The Bermuda government was thrilled to see BA change the airport in London since LHR offers more travel opportunities via a large hub.

Said David Burt, the Premier of Bermuda, “This is a signature achievement which will provide a foundation to extend Bermuda’s tourism reach into Europe. The entire team who worked on this deserves our thanks as we set the stage for a new opportunity for tourism growth. British Airways has been a longstanding and valued partner and through this relationship we have partnered in an innovative change that will be welcomed by travelers to and from Bermuda.”

The new route, which will be serviced by Boeing 777-200s, will begin on March 28, 2021.
