If there’s one thing that hasn’t changed because of the coronavirus global pandemic, it’s my general disdain for United Airlines. The last time I flew on a United plane was back in 2017. I could no longer support the way management was running the airline. Unfortunately, I still had a stash of United miles which I needed to find a use for.
In January 2020, I found flights from Osaka, Japan to Seattle on ANA Business Class for 80,000 miles each. Our trip was supposed to be in two weeks, so it’s no surprise that I needed to cancel that flight. United made it easy to redeposit the miles back into my account.
I now have doubts if I’ll be able to rebook that flight for the same number of miles when we’re able to visit Japan, hopefully at the end of 2021. Thanks to posts from Live and Let’s Fly and One Mile At A Time, we know that United has increased the number of miles it takes to book award tickets with partner airlines. Since United has done away with award charts, nothing stops them from making arbitrary changes to award ticket prices, even in the midst of a global travel slowdown.
All I have to say to United is, “Really United? Really?”
