Airline alliances are pretty awesome things. If you’re a newbie to the points and miles world, here’s a quick lesson in what they are and what they can do for you.
Booking through an airline alliance can have its risks, but on the whole, it’s a great way to use your miles in ways you didn’t think possible (especially, for example, when you cut ties with an airline but still have lots of miles with them that you’d rather use, if at all possible LOL!). So the more airlines that are in any given alliance, the better.
This brings us to the news that the regional Japanese carriers of Japan Air Commuter and Hokkaido Air System will become members of the oneworld alliance, effective October 25th.
With the new additions, passengers using oneworld alliance partners will be able to access Japan via 4 more small airports (Kikai, Okinoerabu, Tajima and Yakushima). This is on top of the over 50 airports the alliance already serves.
Having access to small airports is potentially an excellent timesaver when traveling longer distances within Japan. The bullet train is fast, but it’s not THAT fast.
Both Japan Air Commuter and Hokkaido Air System are owned by Japan Airlines Group (JAL), which is, of course, already a member of the oneworld alliance.
