Happy Sunday to all of our travel friends, both near and far. Here are some articles we’ve read from other bloggers (and other sources) that we think you may like, as well, so we’re passing them along.
- Hawaii no longer requires visitors to quarantine for 14 days if they provide a negative COVID-19 test that meets the state’s requirements. Thousands of tourists have headed to the islands and some of them aren’t following the rules that are in place for mask-wearing and social distancing. Authorities have issued 4,500 warnings and 470 citations since October 15th. There’s no indication if the rule-breakers were tourists or locals, but if people want to be able to travel where and when they want then they’re going to have to make the necessary concessions.
- It was only a matter of time before this happened but I was sad to see several European cities cancel their Christmas Markets. One of our highlights last year was visiting Austria and Germany over the holidays, and we took in several Christmas markets while we were there. However, there’s no question that the markets are everything we’re not supposed to be doing during the pandemic.
- Once again, Air Canada is offering its Jetz fleet of all business class planes on select routes this winter. The planes are normally used for flying sports teams but they’ll fly Canadians from the frozen north to leisure destinations like Florida, Mexico and the Caribbean. This is quite an upgrade over the Air Canada Rouge planes usually flying these routes. If you’ve never had the experience, flying on a sports team’s plane is pretty cool.
- New Zealand has put into place some of the most stringent restrictions on travel of any country, eliminating almost all international travel. That, along with equally strong restrictions on its citizens has resulted in the country almost eliminating the virus within its borders. The government is starting to allow essential workers to enter the country under strict quarantine and testing requirements. That is what makes the story of how 18 members of a Russian fishing crew tested positive when landing on their flight to New Zealand so interesting. How did it happen? I’m not sure but this story and the one about 25 people arrested in Uganda for presenting forged COVID-19 test results; it just shows how there’s no silver bullet to opening up the world.
- Singapore Airlines is starting a non-stop service from JFK to Singapore in November. While they’ve previously offered a non-stop flight from New York, it was based out of Newark. Moving this flight to JFK leads to asking what will happen to the JFK-FRA-SIN fifth-freedom route? We flew to Frankfurt on Singapore Airlines in business class and it was one of the best trans-Atlantic flights we’ve ever been on.
- In a move that surprised no one at this point, Canada announced that the border with the US would be closed for another month, until at least November 21st. This announcement was pretty much the same as the extensions of the closure from April onward. I think Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s hint of when the border will reopen is the most telling.
