Most of the big point hauls from credit cards come from the sign-up bonuses. Banks need to entice people to get the card in the first place before they can try to keep them as customers. The other time you’ll get a generous offer is a retention bonus. That’s a plea from a bank to keep you from canceling a card. Otherwise, you’ll occasionally get targeted bonuses, like the one I just got from American Express offering 15,000 Marriott Bonvoy points by spending $1,500. 10X points on all spend isn’t a bad deal but Marriott points are only worth 0.667 cents each to me, limiting the bonus’s value.
Knowing the history of these offers, I was almost knocked off my chair by the offer I got today from Barclays for my JetBlue Plus card.
- Earn an additional 10 points for every $1 spent on purchases made from November 10th, 2020 to January 31, 2021, up to 10,000 points
- Plus, earn 50,000 points when you spend $3,000 on purchases from November 10, 2020 to January 31, 2021.
That’s 60,000 JetBlue TrueBlue points for spending $3,000 on a card that I already have. I just have to pull it out of the drawer. The bonus points are on top of the regular points you earn with the card which is 6x points on JetBlue purchases, 2x points at restaurants and grocery stores and 1x point on all other purchases.
I value 60,000 JetBlue points around $840. It’s not going to be hard for me to put $3,000 on this card over three months, even if it is just by moving my non-bonused spend from one of my cards earning 2x points on those charges to the JetBlue Plus card.
There’s no enrollment link for the offer, it was added to my account automatically. If you have this card, I’d check your email to see if you’re eligible.
