I don’t know anyone who’s saying 2020 was a major success. Unless you’re the CEO or Netflix or Amazon.
For the rest of us, it’s a year of canceled plans and readjusted expectations.
Did I think this would be the year we spent time in not one but two cabins we rented on Airbnb? Of course, I didn’t.
In February, after singing at Lincoln Center, we had plans to visit Broadway again to see a fundraiser for The Actors Fund and other Broadway shows.
Obviously, that trip didn’t happen and The Actors Fund has now spent most of the year raising money for the many workers of the NYC theater community who have lost their jobs due to the pandemic that has shuttered theaters. If you love theater, donating is a great way to give back to the people who have brought the arts to so many of us.
Maybe that’s why I found this video from The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon featuring Andrew Rannells so touching. It summed up what we’re all thinking about 2020 in a language I understand—the language of Broadway Musicals.
OMG. “I believe that next year we’ll believe in science and not that bleach is an actual medical cure.” I’m crying that’s a statement that has relevance, but it does. And I’m glad that Andrew Rannells still has that note in his register (in the original key!) since we saw him in The Book of Mormon on Broadway (but no offense to him, we liked Josh Gad better when we saw the show. Oh, the pre-COVID memories…).
Seeing a show on Broadway is one of the things I’m most looking forward to in 2021. With vaccines right around the corner, I’m allowed to see this as a possibility. Along with me possibly seeing Hamilton for the 10th time (don’t judge) in Jacksonville FL, if the touring production ends up happening.
Until then, #stayhealthy #staysafe #washyourhands #wearamask
