There’s much discussion about what’s the best champagne served in first class. Some people say that Krug is the king but others prefer Dom Perignon or Cristal. Heck, there are even those who prefer Tattinger or Perrier Jouët.
As far as we’re concerned, they’re all good but we’d be fine drinking some sparkling wine or prosecco. At home, I prefer a bottle of Chemistry by our favorite Oregon wineries or if we’re making mimosas, I always have a bottle of Korbel handy.
So when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won the Super Bowl (in Tampa), they celebrated the victory by popping open several bottles of bubbly.
Total Wine & Spirits broke the news that it wasn’t a bottle of champagne that costs over $100 a bottle that they chose. In fact, it was a $20 bottle of French sparkling wine which is one of their “Winery Direct” selections.
The only difference between French Champagne and sparkling wine is the exact region of origin and has nothing to do with quality. Here’s what the winery says about their product.
Louis Bouillot was founded in 1877 in Nuits-Saint-Georges, a little village nestled the heart of the Côte d’Orby Jean Bouillot. Jean, a wine and spirits merchant, was one of the few in his day to specialize in Crémant de Bourgogne. Louis Bouillot is still located in Nuits-Saint-Georges. With over 130 years of savoir-faire helping to guide us, we continue to specialize in Crémant de Bourgogne and have acquired international fame as Crémant de Bourgogne experts.
The blend of Perle d’Aurore is the pure expression of Louis Bouillot’s perfect knowledge of Burgundy terroirs: Pinot Noir comes from Côte d’Or, Gamay from the South of Burgundy and Chardonnay near Mâcon city.
Wine Enthusiast gives the bottle an 88 score, which is nothing to sneeze at for something priced less than $20.
It just goes to show that price doesn’t always indicate quality. It would also be somewhat wasteful to be spraying $200 bottles of champagne over your teammates during your celebration.
I’m still interested in seeing how the $20 bottle of French sparkling wine the Bucs chose for their celebration tastes. At the worst, it’s going to be a part of a Sunday Brunch mixed with some orange or grapefruit juice.
