The CDC just released new health recommendations for fully vaccinated people, which include many important changes:
- You can gather indoors with fully vaccinated people without wearing a mask.
- You can gather indoors with unvaccinated people from one other household (for example, visiting with relatives who all live together) without masks, unless any of those people or anyone they live with has an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19.
- If you’ve been around someone who has COVID-19, you do not need to stay away from others or get tested unless you have symptoms.
- However, if you live in a group setting (like a correctional or detention facility or group home) and are around someone who has COVID-19, you should still stay away from others for 14 days and get tested, even if you don’t have symptoms.
What that means is that families can finally get back together if the most vulnerable (over 65 yrs. old and those with increased risk factors) have been vaccinated.
It also seems that those who are over 75 and have been fully vaccinated haven’t waited for CDC guidance to plan travel. Bank of America has noticed an increased amount of spending on airfare from those in the 75+ demographic
Even more interesting was there is no corresponding increase in hotel spending, indirectly showing that these are grandparents traveling to see family. who do not need somewhere to stay. These aren’t sightseeing trips but visits to see people they’ve kept away from for the past 12 months.
Is this a sign of things to come? Once more of the population gets vaccinated, will they start to book all of the travel they’ve put off during the pandemic? There’s been plenty of talk about pent-up demand, even with people willing to give up sex to be able to travel again. What happens when it’s as easy as getting one (or two) vaccinations?
It will only be a month or two before we start to find out.
