As of this writing, over 50% of adults over age 18 in the United States are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. That’s a truly incredible number considering where we were just a few months ago. With children 12 and up able to get the Pfizer vaccine a few weeks ago, 50% of the TOTAL U.S. population has now received at least one dose of the vaccine.
With vaccinations open to nearly everyone, regardless of insurance coverage, and most sites accepting walk-up appointments based on availability, it’s easy for those vaccinated to think that the only people still not vaccinated don’t want the vaccine.
That’s far from the truth. I hate to break it to you, but if you’re reading this blog, you’re one of the fortunate ones. While you’re looking towards your new freedoms with your vaccinated life, others aren’t as lucky. I hate to be Captain Buzzkill but not everyone has spent the pandemic worrying about using all of their hotel free night certificates once everything reopens.
Many people still take mass transit to work each day and that same bus or train might not take them to where vaccines are available. If they have kids, they might not be able to take time off to get to a site, and bringing the kids along is a massive chore. Or maybe they’re working two or even three jobs, almost every day, to stay afloat. These hard-working people kept things going during the pandemic and now they’re trying to figure out how to get a vaccine.
Let’s do our part to help them and work to get everyone a vaccine who wants one. Then we can work on the ones who don’t want them.
The White House is already partnering with Lyft to provide transportation to vaccine appointments. However, that’s not enough and Lyft is taking contributions to help its nonprofit partners who proactively serve low-income and vaccine-hesitant groups by connecting them with rides to vaccination sites.
Hilton and Lyft already have a partnership that allows you to earn Hilton Honors points with Lyft. If you haven’t already linked your accounts, you can do so here.
Once the accounts are linked, if you make at least a $5 donation by May 31st to provide Lyft rides for vaccinations, Hilton will match the contribution, up to $50,000. In addition, you’ll earn 2,000 extra Honors points.
If you’re going to donate, make sure to use a card that earns the most points for Lyft expenses. For 2021, the best cards to use are the Sapphire Reserve 10x, Freedom Unlimited/Flex 5%, Sapphire Preferred 3x and AMEX Green Card 3x.
I’m usually skeptical about companies offering bonus points for donations. They’ll get a tax credit for the money they give, so they’re not losing much and what’s $50K to Hilton. However, this money will benefit us all by getting more people vaccinated, helping to decrease the number of cases and keeping us on the path to putting this pandemic behind us.
