Delta Airlines made several changes during the pandemic to make passengers more comfortable about flying. In some areas, they took the lead by blocking middle seats longer than other airlines. Some of their other changes weren’t as well-received, like when Delta changed the boarding process and skipped several boarding groups in favor of a “Back-to-front” process for the majority of passengers.
Depending on how you felt about that change, it appears that Delta Airlines is going back to its previous boarding process.
According to the Internet Archive Wayback Machine, here’s what the Delta website previously said.
Sometime between August and today, that language disappeared.
In this, Delta is following the other major airlines. American and United were already boarding planes the way they did before the pandemic, giving preferential treatment to loyal passengers and those who pay for the privilege. Even Southwest, which changed its boarding process during the pandemic, went back to its usual procedures in March.
I think Delta was honestly trying to board people faster but you’d need to go all-in and board the entire plane from back to front with no exceptions if you’re really serious about that. If you actually want to board as quickly as possible, you could always follow this process developed by astrophysicists.
By just changing the process of those who purchased economy tickets, all Delta managed to do was make people confused. I don’t think that was their intent and why there was no announcement when the change silently went away.
