Over the last several years, many credit cards have added cell phone protection as a perk, as long as you pay for your cell phone bill with the card. While not all coverages are the same, it’s nice to get coverage and earn points at the same time.
Some of the lesser-known cards that offer cell phone protection are the IHG co-brand cards offered by Chase.
- IHG Rewards Club Premier
- IHG Rewards Club Traveler
- IHG Rewards Club Select (no longer available to new applicants)
It was so strange for these cards to offer cell phone coverage because paying your phone bill with the card only earns 1X IHG points per dollar spent.
Unsurprisingly, the three cards will be ending cell phone protection on January 1, 2022. Cardholders will have 90 days to make a claim for a loss that happened on December 31, 2021, or earlier.
I’d make a bet that adding the coverage didn’t cause many cardholders to start paying their cell phone bill with the IHG card. Chase can also see how many people have filed claims. If it’s a small number, there will not be many cardholders who will notice when the coverage is taken away.
If you were one of the people who paid your cell phone bill with an IHG co-brand card, make sure to move your cell phone bill to a different card or find an alternate way to protect your phone.
