Marriott entered the Metaverse and is giving away three NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) for digital art related to the travel brand.
Marriott Bonvoy, Marriott International’s award-winning travel program featuring 30 extraordinary hotel brands and endless experiences, has teamed up with up-and-coming digital artists – TXREK, JVY, and Erick Nicolay – to create three Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). Marriott Bonvoy will become one of the first hospitality brands to create its own NFTs and will unveil the digital art, inspired by the travel program’s recent global “Power of Travel” campaign, on Saturday, December 4 at Art Basel Miami Beach 2021.
While many people may not be familiar with NFTs, they’re a way to prove you’re the owner of digital content as only one person can “own” an NFT.
For instance, Jack Dorsey (the founder of Twitter) sold the NFT of his first tweet for $2.9 million dollars.
While you can still view the Tweet for free, only one person owns the “official” version.
The “Nyan Cat” Gif sold for $580,000 earlier this year.
That’s why I think Marriott Bonvoy is missing the point about NFTs, much like they’ve missed the point about much of their loyalty program. People only want to buy NFTs about things they care about. You can’t simply make up something and sell it as an NFT.
I’d bet that whoever wrote the first “I GOT BONVOYED” tweet after the new program was announced, will be able to sell that NFT for more than the ones for sale at this art event.
At least Marriott is including 200,000 Marriott Bonvoy points to the NFT as a prize so you’ll be able to spend 3 nights at a roadside Courtyard by Marriott after the upcoming devaluation. That’s worth more than you’ll be able to get for a random NFT about Marriott Bonvoy.
Unless the digital artist ends up being the next Picasso or Bansky. If so, congrats to the winners of these NFTs. If not, enjoy your 3 free nights at a Fairfield Inn and Suites along I-10.

I laughed as soon as I saw the headline. No doubt the first “I got Bonvoyed” is worth more than junk Marriott tries to spit out.
LUV the notion, luv it!
