I’ve been happy to pay the annual fee for CLEAR, even if we’ve only saved a few minutes when checking in for flights. While Sharon’s tried to convince me it’s not worth the price, I manage to find a way to make the fee make sense for another 12 months.
I was vindicated during our last flight from Orlando where the regular check-in line for the TSA checkpoint stretched all the way back to the food court (that’s a long way from the checkpoint if you’ve never been to MCO.)
With CLEAR, we walked up to the agent and said we were already members, passing several people who were inquiring how much it cost to skip the line, and headed to a terminal. It was only a quick retinal scan (no removing mask necessary) and we were on our way to the TSA Precheck area. Five minutes, MAX!
Considering that no one should pay more than $119 a year for CLEAR, I view it as a small price to pay in order to ensure getting through the TSA checkpoint is as painless as possible. The fee is more tolerable now that Sharon’s Green AMEX card provides a $100 yearly credit for CLEAR memberships.
Until now, Sharon and I have held individual memberships. Due to various extensions CLEAR provided us, it wasn’t until recently that Sharon’s account was up for renewal. I had a choice. I could pay the $119 renewal fee or add Sharon to my account. CLEAR offers a family plan where you can add up to three additional adults to your account for $60 each.
Should I pay $119 or $60? Not a tough decision.
I canceled Sharon’s account and planned to add her to my account before our next trip. Since CLEAR already has her biometric data on file (including her retinal scans due to an overdue update to the CLEAR scanners) I figured there had to be a way to port her info to my account.
The CLEAR website isn’t user-friendly but I was able to find a post on how to add a previous CLEAR member to your family plan.
If you’d like to add an existing CLEAR member to your Family Plan, please email us at memberservices@clearme.com with their details below and we’ll update your Family Plan for you:
1. Full name
2. Date of birth
3. Email address associated with their CLEAR membership
That’s what I did and within 24 hours Sharon was added to my CLEAR account as part of my family plan. My next renewal price is set for $169 ($109 because I have a Delta co-brand credit card and the additional $60 for a family member.) Since I get a $100 rebate from the Green Card, it will only cost us $70 for both of us to keep CLEAR for each additional year.
I bet people in line at MCO would have paid $35 per person to skip that line at the checkpoint.
