The AMEX Website Fooled Me Again

by joeheg

After logging into the AMEX website, I tabbed through our cards to check for promotions or upgrade offers available on each account. When I got to the AMEX Hilton Surpass card, there was a box on the top of the screen I wasn’t expecting.

It was early in the morning so I read it several times before clicking on the link.

Here’s what I found.

Because the Free Weekend Night is based on calendar year spending, I expected to see zero. But there was no mention of an earned Free Weekend Night award. I went to our Hilton account and there was no night there, either.

To clear things up, I didn’t expect a free night. You have to spend $15,000 with the Hilton Surpass AMEX to earn a free weekend night and I didn’t spend anywhere near that much. However, 2021 was a strange year and I thought I might have missed where Hilton or AMEX changed the requirements or added a free night as a bonus.

I wanted to make sure that we didn’t actually earn a free night. The only way to find out about an AMEX free night from Hilton Honors is to call.

To redeem a Weekend Night Reward, Card Members must call 1-800-446-6677 and mention the code provided by Hilton Honors. You can also check your Hilton Honors account for the status of any Weekend Night Rewards issued to you (including the expiration date) by calling 1-800-446-6677.

I didn’t have to wait long for a representative who looked into the account and said he did not see any American Express Free Night Award. He said I should check with AMEX about the message on their website.

Back to the AMEX site and I opened a chatbox. It was a few minutes for a representative to join the conversation. I explained that I had a box saying I earned a Weekend Night Award but Hilton isn’t showing it. They looked into the account and said I had to spend $15,000 to earn the award, which I did not do in 2021.

I agreed, but I asked why there was a box saying that I earned an award on my screen? I suggested that maybe they should have someone look into that.

The rep logged my feedback and I left the chat.

What did I learn from my adventure?

  • Checking on an AMEX Hilton Free Weekend Night certificate is more complicated than it should be.
  • AMEX’s website is buggy.
  • I still don’t have a Free Weekend Night.

Was it worth an hour of looking at different websites, making phone calls and online chats? If I was only doing it for me, probably not. However, I did it so you don’t have to waste time checking on a phantom Hilton free night in your AMEX account.

The AMEX website has not allowed me to change my airline choice for 2022 despite different browsers, going incognito, using my PC or the mobile app, and copying the link, and trying many, many times over several days. Really, really unhappy!

I also got the box this morning on my Aspire page, but hadn’t spent the $15K. I just assumed they were congratulating me for getting what they owe me anyway. Now I suppose it was just a glitch.

Did you call Hilton? They should be able to tell you if you have one. You may have received an email with a certificate number but if this is just a glitch and you didn’t really earn it the probably not.

Don’t worry. Most readers would not spend $15,000 or go in debt to get a “free” Hampton Inn night !!
