In order to use the $300 annual travel credit from the Capital One Venture X card, you need to book the travel through their portal. We needed a one-night stay on Florida’s east coastand when I looked for rooms with points, there were no good values to be had. The hotels in the area don’t provide any benefits to guests with status, so I decided to book the cheapest hotel I could find, with decent ratings, using the Capital One Travel website.
The total cost for the room was $120.90, which was charged at the time of booking. I could cancel the room until 3:59 PM the day before check-in and receive a refund.
Our plans changed and we no longer needed the room, so I went to the Capital One Travel website to cancel the reservation. That’s when I discovered there’s no way to cancel online.
How to Cancel Your Hotel Reservation
If you need to request a cancellation for your hotel reservation, call the Capital One Travel support team at 844-422-6922.
Hotel cancellation policies vary. So it’s a good idea to review the hotel’s policy before you call. You can find the cancellation policies in your confirmation email. Make sure to check the “Restrictions” section of the email too.
After you call to request a cancellation, Capital One Travel will follow up with you by email to confirm the cancellation once your request is processed.
There wasn’t a wait to talk to a representative when I called. He quickly looked up my booking and reviewed the cancellation policy. After confirming that I would receive a full refund, he told me that once he canceled the reservation, he could not restore it so he needed me to say that I wanted to cancel [my hotel booking information].
I said that I wanted to cancel and he processed the transaction. I would receive an email confirmation of the cancellation and should receive a refund within a few days, but it could take up to 1-2 billing cycles to reach my statement.
In fact, the refund was in my account in 2 days.
I’m hesitant to mention this last part because some people might abuse it. However, it happened, so I’ll share it with you. The day before I canceled my reservation, I received an email from Capital One about my travel credit from the booking being applied to my account.
There is a disclaimer at the bottom of the email about this circumstance.
If the credited Capital One Travel purchase is canceled, the statement credit may be removed from your account, though it can be reissued on any past or future Capital One Travel purchases up to $300. Your Venture X card account must be open and in good standing at the time of statement credit fulfillment.
I’ll be on the lookout to see if Capital One claws back the credit, which they would be totally justified in doing. I wasn’t trying to manipulate the system; it was just a case of plans changing and a reason why I don’t like prepaying for hotel rooms.
