Delta flight attendants (FAs) are dancing in the streets tonight – it was just announced that they will soon be paid for boarding time.
Until now, FAs did not get paid for the time when passengers were loading onto the plane. Instead, their duty time didn’t begin until the plane door shut. During boarding, at best, they got paid a pittance of the equivalent of $2 per hour.
A change.org petition, Flight Attendants Need To Be Paid For Boarding, got over 163,000 signatures a few months ago. Welp, maybe it the power of the petition, or just that Delta management didn’t want to worry about their FAs unionizing. But effective June 2, Delta FAs will get paid for boarding.
It’s being called an industry first.
The amount of time it takes to board a flight varies from domestic (40 minutes) to domestic on a wide body plane (45 minutes) to transoceanic (50 minutes). FAs will be paid according to the amount of time is set to board passengers for that particular flight, via a pay scale based on their respective number of years of service.
All told, it could mean a “raise” of upwards of $4,000 per FA per year!

Surgeons don’t get paid wating if there is a delay in getting the patient to the operating room.
Surgeons also don’t have to say hello to everyone, get things in order, pass out bubbly, help me put my carry on in the overhead cuz I can’t reach, get the person in 12A to move to their actual seat of 12B, etc.
