This story could only happen in a place like New Orleans.
I’ve already shared some of my most embarrassing travel stories, like when I blasted music from my phone on the Tokyo subway. While I wanted to disappear into the background after that happened, I didn’t skip a beat when I noticed this recent mistake.
We slept in after staying up way too late the evening before. Around noon we started to get ready and noticed housekeeping forgot to leave clean washcloths. I walked around the hotel until I found a member of housekeeping and asked for replacements. Once back at the room, we got ready and headed to the Ruby Slipper Cafe location in the CBD, located just a block away from our hotel, the Eliza Jane.
We checked in at the podium and luckily the wait wasn’t too long at 1 PM on a Friday. As we stood waiting for the text saying our table was ready, I noticed that I was still wearing my slippers. I put them on to walk around the hotel on the washcloth quest and never changed into my sneakers when we were getting ready to leave.
The hotel was only 1 block away. I could have gone back and put on shoes. However, my inner voice reminded me that I was waiting to eat brunch at 1 PM on a Friday in New Orleans. No one is going to care that I’m wearing slippers. IMHO, they look enough like shoes that no one will notice at first glance.
I ordered a bacon-infused Bloody Mary and fried chicken eggs benedict, which were both excellent.
Sharon ordered the Southern Breakfast with a mimosa.
What did I learn from the experience? I know that Ruby Slipper Cafe has great brunch food in a casual atmosphere and they don’t care if you show up in your slippers.
