Why There Are More Delays On NYC Subways During 3-Day Weekends

a train at a station

The New York City subway system, run by the MTA, carries over 3 million riders a day on a typical Monday-Friday, while only serving 1-2 million riders a day on the weekends. Visitors to the city love to use the subway but they forget it’s there to get New Yorkers from one place to another.

When visiting NYC, you’ll often notice more track closures and limited schedules on the weekends. This can mean needing to take a different train or even going to a different station to get to where you’re going.

If you’re planning on visiting New York City over Memorial Day weekend, there’s something you need to know. The MTA plans the most extensive projects for three-day weekends. That’s because fewer riders use the trains on these weekends, and they have an additional day to get the work done. Here’s why the MTA plans extra projects for holiday weekends:

While this may be good for the MTA and limits the disruption for the usual riders, it can make using the subway over the weekend extra challenging, especially if you’re not used to the system.

If you’re visiting New York this holiday weekend, or any weekend, make sure to check your route by using a program that follows track closures and rerouted trains. We use Google Maps but there are many different programs and apps for the NYC subway and buses.
