It’s hard to read about aviation nowadays without coming across news regarding all the problems that airlines have been having. Prices are sky high. Delayed or cancelled flights are becoming more and more commonplace, to the point where travelers are making airline plans like these to help ensure they get to where they want to go. Lack of adequate airline and airport staff also means long lines all along the way.
On top of all of that mess, lost luggage is at an all-time high, as well. Over twice as many bags were mishandled by the top 10 U.S.-based airlines in April 2022 (219,723, or 0.55 per 100 bags) than in April 2021 (93,709, or 0.33 per 100 bags), as per the TSA’s June 2022 Air Travel Consumer Report (page 35).
The problem isn’t limited to the U.S., either. The U.K., Europe and Asia are all having their own respective brands of airline-related meltdowns, many similar to ours.
Simply put, it’s a worldwide problem.
Not surprisingly, Australia is having it just as bad as the rest of us. Headlines from and about down under have very familiar rings to them, such as:
- “Meltdown”: Travellers hit by huge delays at Sydney Airport as long weekend looms (9News, June 10, 2022)
- Qantas to Raise Fares and Cut Flights Due To High Fuel Costs (Bloomberg, May 25, 2022)
- Easter bag hunt: Australian travellers left without luggage as airport staff shortages bite (The Guardian, April 15, 2022)
When you’re faced with so much adversity, even when they’re all “first world problems,” sometimes the only thing you can do is laugh.
Mark Humphries is a popular writer/actor in Australia. Born in 1985, he’s the most well known for his work for Adult Learners (2009), Lowering Awareness (2016) and The Roast (2012).
In more recent years, he’s been known as a satirist. So when Qantas had some of its more notorious meltdowns recently, Humphries and his co-writer, Evan Williams, made a new inflight video for the troubled airline. I’ve got to say…it’s perfect!
I hope you enjoyed that as much as I did. Enjoy your day, travel friends!
