Hello and happy Sunday, travel friends, both near and far. Here are some articles we’ve read from other bloggers (and other sources) that we think you may like, so we’re passing them along.
- In 2011, Southwest Airlines introduced its “Live at 35” series, which consisted of impromptu in-flight concerts. Sharon and I could not think of any more annoying thing to find on a flight and were happy to hear that COVID put an end to the concerts. Not to be outdone, Delta SkyClubs have now started to have surprise pop-up events including having an onsite DJ. According to Eye Of the Flyer, Delta says “Select Delta Sky Clubs offer occasional ‘surprise and delight’ activations for guests. The activations, which can include live music, DJs, specialty food offerings and more, are locally produced and managed by the individual, local Club teams.” Let us hope that these events stop as quickly as they started.
- While some things have changed over the past several years, it’s comforting to know that some things have remained the same. For instance, we wrote several years ago about how Euronet ATMs were ripping people off with currency conversion and transaction fees. As it turns out, not much has changed. While the US Dollar and Euro are currently worth almost the same, ATMs are still charging an 8-12% fee to convert withdrawals from one currency to another.
- One of the newest additions to our packing list is a set of Apple AirTags. We put them in our backpacks and luggage to keep track of them during our travels. Hopefully, it could track them down if something gets lost. Our main concern was if an airline lost a checked bag, given the problems airlines are currently having. However, in the back of our minds, we also considered a bag getting stolen. As it turns out, AirTags can lead the police directly to the home of the baggage handler who took your bag home from the airport.
- When it comes to travel bloggers, I will wager that we’re one of the few who have actually flown through Austin Airport’s South Terminal. While our Frontier flight was uneventful and we had an uninspiring shuttle ride to the main terminal to rent a car, the experience was what I’d expect flying a low-cost carrier. In 2017, the 12 million dollar conversion of an Air Force Base quickly added 3 gates to the rapidly expanding airport and took the pressure off until the main terminal expansion was complete. Now, Austin Airport is looking to expand and after only 5 years of a 40-year lease, wants the South Terminal back. So much that they’re claiming eminent domain over the land, which they own and is currently used by Frontier and Allegiant.
- One of our favorite hotels in the world is the Goldener Hirsch in Salzburg, Austria, which is a Marriott Bonvoy Luxury Collection property. While I never considered staying anywhere else in town, my searches always showed another hotel in the area, Schloss Fuschl. Also a Luxury Collection hotel, it’s located a bit outside of the city and is an iconic Austrian lakeside hotel. Unfortunately for Marriott loyalists, the hotel is leaving the Bonvoy program on September 1st. You’ll still be able to stay there as a Rosewood hotel, but you’ll no longer be able to pay an insane amount of Marriott points for the privilege.
